Data published by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) confirm a trend that has been taking hold for decades: growth in global production is increasingly dependent on aquaculture, whilst wild-caught fish stocks are showing a much more moderate trend.
Global aquaculture production remains heavily concentrated in Asia, a region that accounts for nearly 90 per cent of the global total. China maintains a clearly dominant position, followed by India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Bangladesh.
These five countries account for the bulk of global production thanks to a combination of resource availability, production expertise, industrial capacity and large domestic markets.
The report highlights that this concentration will continue to shape the development of international trade in fishery and aquaculture products over the coming years.
